Explaination of Terms:
Websites are software, but software requires a physical location for storage. Web Hosting is the service provided by a vendor which offers this physical location for the storage of webpages and associated files.
Your website will be hosted on a Web Server, which is the physical hardware that provides internet services along with the operating system, server software and TCP/IP protocols. This Webserver processes requests from Browsers for web pages and connects their requests via HTTP.
HTTP stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol, the underlying protocol used by the World Wide Web. It defines the format for transmitting and responding to messages, and the actions that need to be taken to various commands. When a user enters a web address (the domain name), the HTTP sends a command to the server to transmit the corresponding web page.
Domain names are the internet addresses all net users are familiar with, such as www.ANetsite.com. This Domain name is just for the sake of user convenience. It is translated into an IP (Internet Protocol) address, a set of four numbers separated by dots that the computer and network use to identify the appropriate site which is stored on a server.
Web servers come in several types. There are free web hosting servers, but they tend to offer very limited functions and storage space. Any sites on free hosting will be relatively small, simple and full of advertisements. Free websites may not give any choice in domain name.
Subscription servers will host a website for a monthly or annual fee. This fee will vary depending on the services required.
1GB is equal to 1000MB.
Factors in choosing the right hosting service include:
- The amount of disk space needed to contain your website, remembering that it might expand with regular modification.
- The number of email accounts you require.
- The bandwidth, which is how much data a browser can download from your site. Hosting networks usually set a monthly limit on this. It is important to know what will happen if this limit is exceeded.
- Will advertisements appear on the site?
- Is there FTP (File Transfer Protocol) access? Needed for transferring files between the computer and the server.
- Most importantly, what is the customer support like!
